Introduction:
Crime databases provide an important tool for evidence-based policing, trends analysis, policy development, operational efficacy, resource allocation and realignment. Moreover, a centralized and integrated crime data repository is critical for effective crime prevention and control. One of the key mandated functions of National Police Bureau (NPB), as a coordinating body for all police organizations in Pakistan, is to maintain a national crime database and conduct analysis. The Bureau has therefore, as part of its recent initiatives, established a National Crime Data Analytics Unit (NCDAU). The primary objective of this unit is to establish a comprehensive, integrated and centralized crime data collection, analysis, and dissemination capability at the national level.
Objectives/Functions of NCDAU:
- Design and develop technologically upgraded data collection and analysis systems in collaboration with IT experts.
- Develop agreed formats and templates to streamline data collection and processing in collaboration with all police organizations.
- Develop comprehensive guidelines for NCDAU staff to enable informed interpretation of data.
- Create dashboards, reports, and other data visualization tools.
- Conduct crime data analysis to determine crime trends, evaluate efficacy of operational policies and assess resource adequacy.
- Undertake periodic review to evaluate the effectiveness of the data collection mechanisms and suggest improvements.
- Leverage the collected data to improve public safety and police operations
- Disseminate regular updates and findings to policy makers and all other stakeholders through various channels such as periodic reports, newsletters, webinars, and briefings.
