Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS)

Cost

  • Rs. 1107.014 million

Project Scope

  • To computerize fingerprint record of criminals
  • Installation of AFIS equipment at Central Site connected with 52 districts in 1st phase
  • Remaining districts to be covered in phase-2
  • Fingerprints of suspects to be recorded on standard 10-print cards as a backup
  • Centralized database to be created at FIA HQs Islamabad and Multi Function Work Stations (MFWS) at all Police Force HQs

Completion Period

  • 2 years (by June, 2009)

Current Status

  • Phase-I of the AFIS project was inaugurated by Prime Minister of Pakistan on 25 January 2008.
  • Phase I of the project included commissioning of the Central Site (FIA Headquartes), Multi Functional Work Stations at Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta, Muzaffarabad and Gilgit and 52 Remote Terminal Sites (RTs)across the country.
  • Infrastructure development and connectivity of 52 RTs has been completed.
  • Survey of the left over 33 RTs has been completed.
  • 344,000 fingerprints cards entered into the system.
  • 400 Plus Police officers trained.
